Michael Gene SullivanJun 28, 20171 min readBarcelona August 2nd, 2013 7:15am Headin' over to the Almeria Theatre for the reading after our last meeting bout the final line in the script and book. Winston finally proclaims his love for Big Brother. In the book it's admitted to himself, and how to get that done in the play was one of the biggest challenges. So leading up to the last moment I position Winston as a person who has lost everything but is now brimming over with unfocused love, which is in the end gleefully directed at Big Brother. But the question in translating it was what form of love should it be? In romance languages there are different forms of love, so should it be formal vous or informal tu? Before this he is addressing O'Brien, and Winston says he loves him. Should it be the same form of love as he says to Big Brother? We settled on vous for O'Brien, and tu for BB. I wonder if that will be too odd, but we'll see. (Sorry for the French, I still don't speak Catalan.)
